Start taking your own advice

Hey Pythonista,

I've had a few chats with my kids this week to help them through challenges and various things they were worried about... nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, this is pretty much a day-to-day occurrence for all of us parents out there.

The thing that randomly hit me was that the "lessons" I was discussing with my kids are the same lessons I've been discussing with fully grown adults!

These lessons aren't anything special. In fact, I'd wager that the adults I discuss these points with would teach kids the same thing given the opportunity.

It made me wonder, why is it that we're so unlikely to take our own advice?

If a child comes to us saying their nervous about an exam, our general advice is to not worry about the outcome and to just focus on preparing and doing their best. And that they should be proud of themselves for trying their hardest regardless of their result.

Now think about that scenario and adjust it to your own situation. How many times could you have stood to take that same advice you'd so willing pass on to a child?

  • Job interviews

  • Certifications

  • Promotions

  • Sports

  • Competitions

  • That time you froze up staring at a traceback in your first real freelance gig?

  • Last night's round of Battlefield 6 (I'm slowly getting the hang of it!)

You can argue that the stakes are higher as an adult, I know, but you can see where I'm going with this.

So the next time you're staring at your screen stuck on a bug or doubting whether you're cut out for this, pause. Maybe a quick exercise for the next time you're finding something challenging:

"What would you tell a child in this situation?"

Take your own advice and finish off this week with a bang. You'll be surprised how much more progress you'll make when you quiet the noise and just trust that you’ve got what it takes. Reply with a win, when you do ...
