Hey Pythonista,

This morning I had a call with our Pybites Developer Mindset (PDM) coaching group, and I had to share how it went.

We didn’t talk about syntax or the latest pull request on someone's repo.

We did something that most developers skip, which is exactly why most developers stagnate in their careers.

We hit pause and took time to reflect on how this year went.

It's December 5th and the temptation right now is to coast until the holidays, eat too much, and wake up in January with a "new year, new me" hangover.

We’re not doing that. And because you’re one of our beloved subs, I don’t want you doing that either.

I'm going to take you through the exercises we carried out on the call this morning and I want you to do this for yourself. It takes 5 minutes but will determine the trajectory of your next 12 months.

1. The One Word Test If you had to sum up your 2025 in a single word, what would it be?

  • Chaos?

  • Growth?

  • Stagnation?

  • Refactoring?

Don't overthink it. Go with your gut, even if it's tough to admit. My word was "Challenge".

2. The Debugging Log (Wins & Bugs) Developers are great at finding bugs but terrible at documenting features.

  • The Win: What is ONE specific thing you shipped, learned, or achieved this year that you are proud of? (Even if it’s small. Did you finally understand list comprehensions? Did you deploy your first app?)

  • The Bug: What was the biggest obstacle? More importantly, what did it teach you? Setbacks aren’t failures, they’re opportunities to grow.

3. The Commitment Clarity + Consistency beats Intensity.

You don't need a massive New Year's Resolution that you’ll abandon by February. You need a message of commitment for the next week.

What is one small action you will take in the next 7 days to set yourself up for 2026?

Maybe it’s organising your GitHub repo. Maybe it’s reading one chapter of a book. Maybe it’s finally resting so you don’t burn out.

Here is my ask:

Send me your One Word for 2025. Reply to this email or DM me in our community.

I read every single note, and I want to know where your head is at.

Instead of letting the year fizzle out, let’s make sure we finish with intention.

Cheers,

Julian

P.S. If your word for 2025 was "Stuck," and you want your word for 2026 to be "Senior," we should talk. Spots for PDM in January open as early as the 12th. Register your interest using the link below.
